Oil dem Valves!
“Oilcan” said the Tin Man. “Oil can what?” asked the Scarecrow. PREVENT CORROSION , that’s what!
It’s not uncommon for rotor valves to stick for lack of oil on the rotors and spindles. Not only does oil lubricant moving parts, it also coats and protects surfaces from corroding. Once biofilm dries and copper carbonate forms, it acts as an abrasive excellerating wear.
Rotor valves require three and sometimes four different types of oil. Viscosity is specific for each of the following applications.
- Rotor valve oil- Remove valve slide, apply a few to drops down inner slide tubes. While holding upright, insert valve slide. Rotate Horn 180 degrees, allowing oil to run into casing onto valve, then work the lever to distribute oil.
- Spindle bearing oil- Remove rotor cap and apply a few drops on rotor spindle. Draw the slide without depressing the lever. The vacuum created will draw in the spindle oil. Then repeat the same by applying a few drops onto the shaft under the rotor arm.
- Lever and linkage oil- Apply to the lever hinge tubes and articulated pivot points.
- Ball joint oil- Apply to ball linkages
