Excerpt Resources
Here are some resources for orchestral excerpt study. Some are CD/mp3 albums, some are YouTube playlists, and some are books. NOTE: listening to (and knowing) the complete works – both live and recorded – is VITAL – as is score study!
The parts to public domain (be careful, be sure the music is public domain before downloading) works can be found at IMSLP. Gordon Cherry has published the Low Brass Orchestra Collection – parts for Trombone, Tuba, Tenor Tuba, Bass Trumpet and Alto Trombone, featuring over 400 major works from the orchestral literature.
Joe Alessi has some wonderful tools at Alessi Music Studios, including “the Orchestra ‘Machine’ 2.0 (a new way to prepare orchestral excerpts by playing along with an orchestra).” It is subscription based, but very reasonably priced.
These books are excellent:
Listen to these – some are free, some are not (not all bass trombonists, but it’s a lot of the same tunes).
